26 April 1962 25 September - From fugitive to capture: Matteo Messina Denaro, the "boss of bosses" who finally fell

Convicted killer, high-ranking mobster, and fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro, who eluded capture for decades, has been apprehended, bringing an end to his reign as "boss of bosses" in Sicily's Cosa Nostra crime group.

Messina Denaro, known as "Diabolik" after the infamous comic book character, is believed to have ordered dozens of Mafia-related murders, including the 1992 bombing that killed two anti-Mafia judges.

His capture marks a significant victory for Italian law enforcement, which had been pursuing Denaro for over 30 years. He was detained in a medical clinic in Palermo, where he was reportedly receiving treatment for cancer.
